Again, things happen due using the superpower, and because of other personal stuff. Granparents take them in, but they need to keep a low profile. The big brother, Sean, decides that they are going to their grandparents’ house and they walk long way to them. They’ve been fugitives living in the woods and practising to control Daniel’s superpower. Whatever issues Dontnod ran into between the two episodes should’ve been ironed out prior to the release of the game. The story of Life is Strange 2 is about two brothers who run away after the little brother, Daniel, uses his superpower and accidentally a cop dies. But how am I expected to pick up Episode 2: Rules and care about these two brothers that I’ve since moved on from? It’s hard to do that when you don’t hear from them for two months. The bond I formed with Sean and Daniel after that emotional first episode has been lost.ĭontnod had me hooked with Episode 1 back in September. Life is Strange, and other stories of this nature, are best experienced when you develop a relationship with the characters. Having to wait months in between episodes just completely kills all momentum and with so many great games releasing every month, it’s easy to get sucked away and never return. Given what has happened with Telltale Games and how long we’ve been waiting for Life is Strange 2, I’m beginning to grow weary of this episodic release structure. After all, one of my biggest complaints with the original Life is Strange was that you had these incredibly emotional moments brought down by finicky gameplay. Perhaps following the release of the well-received first episode, Dontnod is pushing themselves to bring the gameplay up to the standards set forth by this intense, captivating storyline that is truly reflective of the current state of America. As a game that heavily emphasizes narrative storytelling, I can’t imagine the gameplay mechanics are incredibly complex but, looking back at Life is Strange – despite the glowing reviews – it was an incredibly clunky game. It’s an incredibly vague explanation, but it sounds as though the previous systems used for the original Life is Strange don’t fit with what they are trying to accomplish in Episode 2 and beyond. So what took so long?ĭontnod further explained that the “ambition” of Life is Strange 2 “means that the previous frameworks no longer apply if we are to meet the quality of play and storytelling that our vision for a game like this demands and that you deserve.” I understand wanting to release a game your proud of, but that’s really no excuse for making fans wait months between episodes. “The Life is Strange series is a project close to all of our hearts and one for which we do not want to rush development and thereby fail to meet the benchmark of quality and emotional impact that you, our players, deserve,” Dontnod said in a post on the developer blog. Although they couldn’t commit to a specific release date, they did at least narrow it down to the January 2019 release window. Developer Dontnod finally provided an update as to when we can expect Episode 2: Rules to arrive. It has been over two months since the first episode of Life is Strange 2 debuted and the wait for the follow-up has been painfully long.įollowing the release of Episode 1: Roads, we haven’t even seen or heard much about the game until yesterday. One of the biggest problems I have with episodic storytelling in video games is how long fans are forced to wait in between episodes.
